Master the operation of Mobile Booms (3b). Essential training for construction, maintenance, and industrial access. Book your course today.

Training for boom-type Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs). Essential for reaching over obstacles and working at height.
The core IPAF category for cherry pickers. Covers self-propelled booms that can be driven while elevated. Learn articulation, outreach, and safe driving.
For vehicle-mounted or trailer-mounted cherry pickers that use outriggers. Often required for highways, tree surgery, and facilities management.
Unlike scissor lifts, a full body harness with an adjustable restraint lanyard is mandatory in all boom type platforms. This module is included.
Learn critical ground controls and emergency lowering procedures to rescue an operator stuck at height.
We train you on the specific boom lifts you will encounter on site.
Features a jointed arm (‘knuckle’) to reach up and over obstacles. Ideal for crowded sites.
Straight boom extending directly out. Offers maximum outreach distance for working at extreme height.
Boom mounted on a truck or van chassis. Essential for street lighting and utility maintenance.
Simple steps to become a qualified cherry picker operator.
Select the ‘Mobile Boom (3b)’ course. Consider adding ‘3a’ for a combined license.
Complete the classroom module covering safety regulations, ground conditions, and hazards.
Hands-on training. Learn to drive, position, and elevate the boom smoothly and safely.
Pass the assessment and receive your digital PAL Card valid for 5 years.
Check if your specific machine requires full fall protection.
Note: IPAF mandates harnesses for all boom-type platforms.
Boom lifts offer versatility that scissor lifts cannot match.
Understanding the unique capabilities of boom lifts.
Unlike scissor lifts which go straight up, booms can reach over walls, machinery, or structural steelwork to access difficult areas.
Telescopic booms provide significant horizontal outreach, allowing operators to work at height without being positioned directly underneath the job.
Our training specifically covers the ‘catapult effect’ – a major risk in booms – ensuring operators know why harnesses are life-saving in this machine type.
“I was nervous about the height of the boom lift, but the instructor was patient and clear. I now feel fully confident operating the machine.”
“The harness training part was an eye-opener. I didn’t realize how important the correct lanyard length was until this course.”
“Great day. We covered both 3a and 3b, but the boom section was definitely the highlight. Good machines to learn on.”
Common questions about cherry picker courses.
Yes. It is IPAF and HSE best practice to wear a full body harness with a short, adjustable restraint lanyard in all boom-type platforms.
The 3b license covers you for Mobile Booms of any height. However, you should always have a familiarisation session if moving to a much larger machine than you trained on.
Outdoor booms are rated for wind (usually up to 12.5 m/s). Our training covers how to use an anemometer and check wind ratings on the machine data plate.
Yes, we highly recommend the 3a & 3b Combo course. It covers both machine types in a single day and is much more cost-effective.
