Essential safety training for using personal fall protection equipment (PFPE) in Mobile Elevating Work Platforms. Covers selection, inspection, and safe use.

IPAF offers specific modules tailored to different roles, from operators to safety inspectors.
Theory-based course (often eLearning) for managers and supervisors. Covers legislation, hierarchy of fall protection, and equipment selection. Prerequisite for HU and HI.
Practical training for MEWP operators. Learn to visually inspect your own harness, fit it correctly, and attach to the correct anchorage point.
Advanced course for those responsible for the periodic detailed inspection of harness equipment. Qualifies you as a ‘Competent Person’ for inspection.
Most delegates choose to combine HA + HU (for operators) or HA + HU + HI (for inspectors) into a single training day for efficiency.
Identify the right level of harness training for your role.
For Managers & Planners. Understand the regulations and how to select the right equipment for the job.
For Operators. Learn to check your kit daily and wear it safely. Essential for boom lift operators.
For Safety Officers. Gain the skill to formally inspect and record the condition of harnesses.
Simple steps to harness safety compliance.
Decide if you need Awareness, User, or Inspection level training.
Complete the theory module. This can often be done via eLearning to save time.
For User/Inspector courses, attend a practical session to demonstrate fitting and checking skills.
Pass the assessment to have the relevant category added to your IPAF PAL Card.
Tell us your role, and we’ll recommend the correct harness module.
Note: HA is the foundation for all other modules.
Falls from height remain a leading cause of fatal accidents. Correct equipment saves lives.
Understanding the ‘Catapult Effect’ is central to our harness training.
If a boom lift drives over a bump, the basket can whip violently. Without a harness and short lanyard, the operator can be catapulted out.
We train on ‘work restraint’ systems. The goal is to keep you inside the basket, not to catch you after you fall.
A damaged harness is useless. Our ‘User’ module teaches you to spot cuts, abrasions, and chemical damage before every use.
“I learned how to spot faults I would have definitely missed before. Essential course for anyone responsible for kit.”
“Essential for our boom operators. We combined it with the 3b course so the lads were fully qualified in one go.”
“The instructor explained the catapult effect clearly. I’ll never go up in a boom without clipping on again.”
Common questions about PFPE in MEWPs.
Generally, no. IPAF guidance states harnesses are not normally required in vertical lifts (3a) unless a specific site risk assessment deems it necessary.
They must have a pre-use check daily by the user. Additionally, a formal detailed inspection by a ‘competent person’ must be recorded at least every 6 months.
Yes, like the PAL Card, the IPAF Harness qualification is valid for 5 years.
For most MEWP operations, a ‘work restraint’ lanyard (short, adjustable) is preferred to prevent you falling out, rather than ‘fall arrest’ which catches you after a fall.
