IPAF Harness Training: Essential Safety for MEWP Operators
Working at height in a boom-type MEWP carries a real risk of being thrown or ejected from the platform. IPAF harness training teaches operators and supervisors how to select, fit, use and inspect personal fall-protection equipment (PFPE) correctly — so a harness actually does its job when it matters. Delivered by IPAF-approved instructors, these short courses sit alongside standard MEWP operator training and are increasingly expected on well-run construction and industrial sites.
Why harness training matters
Falls and ejections from Mobile Elevating Work Platforms are among the most serious access-related incidents. On a boom lift (category 3b), a correctly fitted harness with the right lanyard, attached to the manufacturer’s designated anchor point, is what keeps an operator inside the basket during sudden movement. Harness training removes the guesswork: it shows exactly which equipment to use, how to wear it, and how to check it before every shift.
The three IPAF harness courses
- Harness Awareness (HA) — a theory course for managers, supervisors and anyone who needs to understand harness use without operating equipment. Available as eLearning or in the classroom.
- Harness User (HU) — a practical course for operators who actually wear a harness in a MEWP. It is often combined with a 3b operator course and adds the qualification to the operator’s record.
- Harness Inspector (HI) — for those responsible for the statutory inspection of PFPE. It requires prior Harness Awareness and Harness User completion.
What the courses cover
Across the three levels, training covers harness types and components, correct selection for the task, step-by-step fitting and adjustment, attaching to the right MEWP anchor point, pre-use checks, and the records that demonstrate compliance. Inspectors additionally learn how to carry out and document formal examinations of equipment so it can be safely kept in service or withdrawn.
Harness training in India with Siritech
As Indian construction, infrastructure, oil-and-gas and facilities projects adopt international height-safety standards, demand for harness-trained MEWP operators is rising. Siritech Training delivers practical, hands-on instruction that pairs harness competence with operator certification, so your team leaves site-ready. Harness use is closely tied to boom-lift work — see our guide to 3a and 3b IPAF training and the IPAF PAL Card for how it fits into full certification.
Frequently asked questions
Do I always need a harness in a MEWP? A harness is generally required in boom-type platforms (3b). For vertical platforms such as scissor lifts (3a), a guardrail is usually the primary protection — always follow the site risk assessment and machine manufacturer’s guidance.
How long does harness training take? The Harness Awareness, User and Inspector courses are each short — typically around half a day.
Can harness training be added to my operator course? Yes. Harness User is commonly delivered together with a 3b operator course so you earn both qualifications in one visit.
