Essential Training for Safe Operation

Who Is This For?

The IPAF MEWP Operator Training Course is designed for anyone who operates Mobile Elevating Work Platforms. It is also highly beneficial for those who supervise or rescue operators. No prior experience is needed.

This course instructs candidates on all concepts to enable them to safely and effectively operate MEWPs. Upon successful completion, operators are awarded the PAL Card (Powered Access Licence), recognized worldwide as a sign of high-quality operator training.

Course Duration & Content

The course duration varies from one to three days, depending on candidate experience and machine complexity. A single day is a minimum of 7 hours.

Theory Section: Can be taken as eLearning, in-person, or virtually. Includes:

  • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Safe Systems of Work
  • Hazards and Risks Assessment

Practical Section: Hands-on training at an IPAF Approved Training Centre. Includes:

  • Pre-use Checks and Inspections
  • Emergency Systems for Lowering
  • Machine Controls & Storage
  • Practical Assessment
Specialist & Advanced Training

Construction Hoist (CH) Trainer

Instructs candidates to deliver training to CH operators on several CH types. Covers Installer, Advanced Installer, and Operator levels.

Mast Climbing (MCWP) Courses

Comprehensive suite for MCWPs: Mobile Operator, Demonstrator, Installer, Trainer, and Instructor levels.

For experienced operators wishing to become an IPAF Instructor. Assesses ability to convey information and deliver training.

Competent Assessed Person (CAP)

Advanced assessment for those undertaking statutory inspections of MEWPs, MCWPs, or Construction Hoists.

Operator Renewal

Shorter course for existing PAL Card holders to renew and upskill. Can be done via Virtual Reality simulator.
